Our school is located at the Longdong Campus of Guangdong University of Technology (GDUT), which lies within the Longdong National Forest Park scenic area in Tianhe District, Guangzhou, adjacent to the South China Botanical Garden. The school trace its roots to the Department of Social Sciences established in 1995 and began enrolling undergraduate students in 2004. Adhering to the motto “Integrity, Justice, Principle, Action” and the people-oriented educational philosophy, it commits to cultivating people with morality and also knowing the knowledge of law, and cultivating high-quality legal and social work professionals. The school focuses on fields such as data rule of law, human rights rule of law, intellectual property, Greater Bay Area governance, social policy, and social governance and services to shape disciplinary characteristics and develop academic advantages.
The school currently has 63 faculty members and over 1,200 full-time undergraduate and graduate students. There are three undergraduate majors in Law, Law (China-Australian Program), and Social Work, along with a micro-specialty on “Governance in the Bay Area”. An innovative class for the undergraduate Law program has been launched since 2023. At the graduate level, the school has one academic master’s program in Corporate Compliance Risk Management and two professional master’s programs in Law and Social Work. The Law program is recognized as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program Construction Site, and courses including Constitutional Law, Public Relations, and Public Welfare Project Management have been designated as Guangdong Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Courses.
The school boasts five provincial-level research platforms: the Guangdong University of Technology Research Center for Human Rights and the Rule of Law (a Guangdong Provincial Social Sciences Research Base), the Guangdong University of Technology Research Center for Network and Data Rule of Law (a Guangdong Provincial Social Sciences Research Base), the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Collaborative Governance and Rule of Law Guarantee Research Center (a Guangdong Provincial Decision-Making Consulting Research Base), the Guangzhou Research Center for Data Rule of Law (a Key Humanities and Social Sciences Research Base of Guangzhou), and the Digital Economy and Data Governance Laboratory (Branch) (a Key Philosophy and Social Sciences Laboratory of Guangdong Province). It also hosts a university-level major research team: the Data Rule of Law and Greater Bay Area Governance Research Team. Additionally, the school houses the National Social Work Professional Training Base (affiliated with the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the PRC) and the Guangdong Provincial Social Work Professional Training Base (affiliated with the Guangdong Provincial Department of Civil Affairs), as well as the first legal aid workstation established by the Guangdong Legal Aid Bureau in a provincial university—the Guangdong University of Technology Legal Aid Workstation. Its Experimental Teaching Center is a university-level exemplary experimental teaching center, featuring a moot court, comprehensive law laboratory, social rule of law science laboratory (smart classroom), case discussion room, elderly counseling laboratory, casework laboratory, group work laboratory, and community work laboratory. Other facilities include a professional library, Party building office, and Red Station (Legal Clinic) in the student community.
The school has a high-quality faculty reasonably organized with high teaching quality and academic capabilities. There are 53 full-time teachers, including 26 professors and associate professors, 4 doctoral supervisors, 10 postdoctoral co-supervisors, and nearly 80% of the teachers hold doctoral degrees. The school has 39 on-campus master’s supervisors and 71 off-campus master’s supervisors. The faculty includes experts receiving special government allowances from the State Council, members of the Ministry of Education’s Teaching Steering Committee for Law Programs, experts for the Ministry of Education's Undergraduate Teaching Audit and Evaluation, vice president of Hong Kong and Macao Basic Law Research Association of CLS, standing director of the China Association of Social Work Education, members of the Academic Degrees Committee of Guangdong Province, vice president of the Guangdong Law Society, recipients of the “South Guangdong Excellent Teacher” award, “Guangdong University Counselor of the Year” award, and the university's first “Award for Teaching Excellency and Student Nurturing”. Many teachers are engaged as consulting experts by various provincial institutions, and some serve as presidents of academic associations such as the Guangdong Law Society’s Pharmaceutical and Food Law Research Association, the Guangdong Law Society’s Industrial Rule of Law Research Association, and the Guangzhou Law Society’s Human Rights Law Research Association. Social service organizations initiated by the faculty have achieved remarkable results and received praise from the government and and also from the industry. In recent years, the school has made impressive achievements in securing national and provincial-level research projects, including 13 National Social Science Fund projects (1 key project) and 7 Ministry of Education projects. Teachers have also made significant progress in publishing high-level papers, obtaining instructions from national and provincial leaders on consulting reports, winning the first prize of Guangdong Provincial Outstanding Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences, and advancing research in fields such as data rule of law, Greater Bay Area governance, and human rights protection.
International education has achieved new breakthroughs. The school collaborates with the University of Technology Sydney (Australia) to offer the Law (China-Australian Program), which achieved outstanding results in its first enrollment in 2024. In addition, the school has signed an agreement with the University of St. Thomas School of Law (Minnesota, USA) for a “3+1” joint training LL.M. program, and established close cooperation with institutions such as the Faculty of Law of University of Macau, Hong Kong Youth Outreach, and Asia University (Taiwan). It regularly organizes overseas study visits and exchanges for students every year. Brand activities such as moot court competitions, social work case analysis contests, the “Guangdong-Taiwan Outstanding Young Students Study Tour”, and the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Youth Public Welfare Tour” provide high-quality platforms for students to broaden their horizons, enhance practical abilities, and improve comprehensive quality. Students have won a number of national and provincial awards, including the second prize in the 19th “Challenge Cup” National Special Competition on Tackling Key Problems, the bronze medal in the 9th “Challenge Cup” China University Student Entrepreneurship Plan Competition, the special prize in the 13th “Challenge Cup” National College Student Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition in Guangdong, the silver medal in the 8th China International “Internet+” University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition Guangdong Division, the first prize in the Red Special Competition of the 17th “Challenge Cup” College Student Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition in Guangdong, and the first prize in the “FLTRP Cup” National English Speech Contest (Guangdong Division). The school’s Communist Youth League Committee has been awarded honors such as the “National-Level May Fourth Red Flag League Branch” and the “Provincial-Level May Fourth Red Flag League General Branch.” Over the past five years, the overall employment rate of fresh graduates has remained above 94%. A group of outstanding alumni are active in the frontline of Guangdong’s economic and social development, including Cai Yanqing (Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum), Zhou Xiaoyan (National Leader in Professional Social Work), Liang Lifa (National Advanced Individual in Elderly Care Services), and Chen Hanliang (recipient of the “Guangdong Provincial May 1st Labor Medal”).
The continuous advancement of comprehensive law-based governance of the country and the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area have brought rare external opportunities and broad development space for the school. The Law School will seize these opportunities, thoroughly implement Xi Jinping Thought on the Rule of Law and the spirit of the Opinions on Strengthening Legal Education and Legal Theory Research in the New Era issued by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council, focus on high-quality development, strengthen interdisciplinary integration, and strive to build a distinctive, caring, and influential law school in the Greater Bay Area.
